FLIR (forward looking infrared radiometer) ONE, offers a new way of finding out how hot you and your friends are – literally. This portable infrared camera accessory plugs into your phone or tablet and offers full thermal imaging on your mobile device.
The FLIR ONE expands your field of vision, allowing you to see heat signatures. Thermal imaging works using infrared cameras which can see different parts of the light spectrum to normal visible light, so you can see heat sources even in complete darkness.
At £199/$250, this is either an expensive toy or a great value scientific tool depending on your point of view. With a resolution of 160 x 120 resolution, the FLIR ONE uses patented MSX technology. This utililes both the visible and infrared on-board cameras which are then combined to create a higher quality and crisper video and images. The built-in, rechargeable battery within the camera accessory also means there is no reduction in your handsets battery life.
From searching for heat dissipation in your home and finding the heat signature of your pet hiding in the garden to using it as a security camera – there are lots of exciting everyday uses for thermal imaging.
The accessory plugs into the lightning port on your iOS device or the micro-USB port on your Android device, giving you a pocket-sized infrared camera. You can download the accompanying app for free on the Apple and Google Play stores.
The FLIR ONE for iOS is available now with the Android version coming in August 2015. You can find more information about FLIR ONE from their website.
